Driver

The purpose of the role is to safely and effectively drive and maintain BPIL vehicles to a high-quality standard. The role may also support BPIL operational activities as required.

The role

Key position responsibilities

  • Ensure the vehicle is properly loaded/prepared and ready to leave as per the agreed schedule.
  • Carry out daily, pre-trip, post-trip, and other periodical vehicle inspections as stipulated in the BPIL fleet inspection procedures.
  • Keep all logbooks up to date and submit copies monthly to the Transport Manager.
  • Ensure third-party insurance or registration stickers are valid at all times.
  • Alert the Transport Manager in writing at least 4 weeks before expiry of insurance or registration.
  • Keep the vehicle interior and exterior clean at all times.
  • Ensure the vehicle receives the correct maintenance in a timely fashion to prevent avoidable breakdowns and maximize vehicle performance.
  • Carefully monitor fuel and oil consumption of the vehicle, ensuring records are accurate and no supplies are diverted.
  • Drive responsibly, showing care and consideration for other road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, and minimizing risks to all vehicles under the Driver’s control.
  • Ensure BPIL vehicles are only used for official business and only in accordance with BPIL vehicle use procedures.
  • Adhere to the scheduled route and destination.
  • Carry out any other duties as requested by the Transport Manager.

The role

Qualifications, skills & experience

  • O’ level certificate or Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE).
  • Valid Ugandan driving license applicable to the class of vehicle being driven; manual transmission essential.
  • 3–4 years’ experience of professional driving.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, traffic laws, and traffic highway codes.
  • Ability to work under pressure and flexibility.
  • Experience driving 4x4 and truck vehicles in difficult terrain and in all seasons.
  • Ability to work as part of a highly functioning team.
  • Excellent record and time management.
  • Working mechanical knowledge enabling basic maintenance of the vehicle.
  • Good oral and written communication.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle in an economical manner.
  • Computer knowledge.
  • Value adding (willingness to go an extra mile for BPIL, staff, and customers).
  • Enthusiasm, passion, and encouragement to all.
  • Strong commitment to the mission, vision, and values of BPIL.
  • Result driven.
